Dormant viruses re-emerge in patients with lingering sepsis, signaling immune suppression

A provocative study from the School of Medicine links prolonged episodes of sepsis — a life-threatening infection and leading cause of death in hospitals — to the reactivation of otherwise dormant viruses in the body. Pictured is the Epstein-Barr virus.

Lodge appointed vice chancellor for research

Jennifer K. Lodge, PhD, associate dean for research and professor of molecular microbiology at the School of Medicine, has been appointed vice chancellor for research. Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton, Larry J. Shapiro, MD, dean of the School of Medicine, and Provost H. Holden Thorp, PhD, made the announcement.

Plan ahead: Fair Saint Louis to impact campus parking July 3-5​​​

Fair Saint Louis​ will be held July 3-5 in Forest Park. WUSTL will sponsor the event by providing access to several campus parking areas beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 3. Large crowds are expected, and anyone who does not need to drive to campus during the fair is advised not to.​

Harris Institute leads meeting to discuss crimes against humanity convention

The Whitney R. Harris World Law Institute led a meeting in Switzerland in May to discuss drafting a new global convention on crimes against humanity. The meeting brought together members of the United Nations International Law Commission and legal experts from around the world. The meeting addressed the substance and the politics of a new treaty. Gordon elected to American Philosophical Society

Jeffrey I. Gordon, MD, has been elected to the American Philosophical Society, founded in 1743 by Benjamin Franklin for the purpose of “promoting useful knowledge.” Gordon is director of the Center for Genome Sciences & Systems Biology.

Fed interventions during financial crisis actually worked, study finds

Contrary to popular belief, the Federal Reserve’s effort to encourage banks’ lending during the recent financial crisis by providing them short-term loans worked — and, in fact, worked quite well — finds a new study by Jennifer Dlugosz, PhD, assistant professor of finance, and colleagues.
